Keith Olbermann will not host his own show, but has taken time from taking care of his father for a little blog war.
Now, why would an already-imploding blowhard pick an immature fight with a popular young sports columnist? Nobody wants try to get inside the head of the increasingly unstable Keith, but going after Bill Simmons seems like another sign that his fragile emotional state is nearing Armageddon and why NBC execs are increasingly worried.
Last week, “The Sports Guy” wrote a column arguing that Tiger Woods comeback on the golf course would be more difficult than Ali returning to boxing after avoiding the Vietnam draft.
That might be dumb, but the guy is paid to give provocative opinions on sports-related topics. What’s the big deal? It’s called free speech.
Enter Olbermann, who apparently felt compelled to personally attack Simmons on his MLB blog:
If the writer can let me know when Woods is punitively drafted by the military even though he is about eight years older than almost all the other draftees, I’ll begin to take him seriously. In the interim I am again left to marvel how somebody can rise to a fairly prominent media position with no discernible insight or talent, save for an apparent ability to mix up a vast bowl of word salad very quickly.
I’m sure Bill Simmons’ thousands upon thousands of young dedicated readers, the same readers who pay for his podcasts and buy his best-selling books, would disagree with the “no discernible insight or talent” bit.
Simmons then Tweeted in response:
KO, please know the feeling is mutual. You’re my worst case scenario for my career in 12 yrs: a pious, unlikable blowhard who lives alone.
Worst case scenario, indeed. Simmons then Tweeted a correction:
I feel bad about saying Olbermann lives alone. I forgot about his cats.
Me-ow!
And now the latest- Olbermann is actually accusing Simmons of impersonating people to leave negative comments on the MLB site.
And we now encourage Mr. Simmons to again falme [sic] the comments section under various identities, to his heart’s content. This is a managed site, and they can take ‘em down. But enjoy yourself.
This may just be a frivolous and minor spat among relatively minor media players, but it goes to a pattern of unraveling for Keith. Why gratuitously attack “The Sports Guy?” What did he ever do to you? He’s a successful figure at ESPN, so there’s probably some jealousy factoring in, but come on.
With Olbermann’s ratings in steady decline, you’d think he’d avoid picking useless fights that alienate more people. For the record, an online poll shows 87% of respondents are on Team Simmons. It sure is lonely on Team Olbermann!
By the way, Simmons’ reference to Keith living alone could have something to do with rumors about the stalker’s once live-in girlfriend, Katy Tur (pictured below in happier times.) We hear that Katy has had enough of Keith and has flown the coop. Maybe he can reignite his affair with karmabites1!
